The Derby is like a sports fan’s dream rec room: Microbrews on tap, a stellar menu, four high-definition flat screens, and most importantly, the kind of pub atmosphere where everybody really does know your name.
“We wanted to create a cool, comfortable environment where all our friends could come and watch sports,” explains Craig Black, who co-owns The Derby with fellow film-industry worker Chris Watson. “We’ve always done that in our homes, so when we had the opportunity to start a business we knew how to execute.”
Indeed, The Derby soon earned a devoted following after opening in the summer of 2014: Arsenal fans flock to the Dundas Street West pub on Saturday mornings to catch English Premier League soccer, the NFL rules on Sundays — along with occasional bouts of pop-up barbecue — and the rest of the week is packed with action from the NHL, NBA, CFL and Major League Baseball.
