Been looking for a good Mexican place after moving here from the US. Will continue to keep looking. Honestly this is the worst Mexican I've ever had. We just had the tacos and burritos. The food is sweetened unnecessarily and I ended up grabbing a bottle of jarred salsa instead of the big tub I spent 7 bucks on. That says a lot! The rice was awful. The beans horrible. Stay away!
I took my teenage daughter for a "treat" after bragging about how awesome the food was. I was a bit embarassed as the restaurant looked unclean and the food was not at all what I remembered. My daughter has food sensitivities and the restaurant bost to specialize in vegan and gluten free. When we mentioned that my daughter required Gluten free and vegan recipes the waitress went to speak to the chef and she was given one option. The price of $42 was a rip off. Next time --Mucho Buritto?sad
After years of eating at Under the Volcano we had another great meal once again. The margaritas are always good,as well as the chips and salsa before the meal. I tend to stick with the spicy foods whereas my wife prefers it relatively mild. My wife had the beef burrito and I the blackened chicken chimichanga (made extra hot). The desserts are fantastic but my favorite has to be the deep fried ice cream. The new location is still being settled into it seems but I'm looking forward to seeing it all finished.
My mom years ago had been to under the volcano at its loction on colborne st. She said it was to die for. I was exicted to go there for the first time on May 14 2012 at about 5 o'clock. I found the decor was cheap and dirty looking. They had there tuesdays taco buffet on for $15.99. I found the buffet was very over priced for what it actually offered. I was considering ordering off the menu but the waiter recommened the buffet for the variety of dish considering it was my first time. I found the food had no taste, i was expecting an authentic spicy mexicain dish. The tacos were worse then the ones i make for my self at home. There was not as much to choose from as i had expected, i thought they would have put out nacho chips considering it was a mexican restaraunt. The food seemed old and like it had been reheated. The server never came back to even see if the meal was okay or to even ask if we would like another glass of water I found the service friendly but poor. After i left i felt sick to my stomache i wish i had not had even ate there in the first place. I will not be returning to this restaruant. this was the worst meal i have had in a long time. I would be disgusted if i was served this at my house. This deffinetly wasnt restaraunt quality let alone homemade quality. We wondered why it was dinner time and there was only one other couple there when we walked in after eating this fod we know why no one was at this establishment.
Disappointed. Really disappointed. For the price I paid, the food wasn't as great as I expected. Not very authentic. For the price, as well, my son was starving after and had to make something more when we got home. This is the 2nd chance I gave this place. Never again.
My boyfriend and I went to Under the Volcano for Valentines Day and it was great! The restaurant was packed the whole time we were there and our server was still very attentive and speedy. Our Margaritas were excellent we had the Pacific Blue and the Pink Lemonade Margarita. Delicious! For dinner my boyfriend had the smothered steak and I had the blackened tilapia. They were both great! Because the resturant was so busy we were prepared to wait a little longer than usual for our dinners but everything still arrived in the appropriate amount of time! We will definetly be going back!
So tasty and fresh! Helpful staff! Fajitas and the chimichangas rocked!! deep fried ice cream is a must along with a tasty volcano coffee!! Supreme decadence!
We were in recently for my Dad's bday. We had 20 people in our party. We were given a private room, which was great for the kids, as they were free to roam a little without bothering other patrons. Our server Colin was absolutely the best! He got everyones orders perfectly. He refilled everyones drinks without having to ask what they ordered and even managed to divide our bills up correctly without asking how it was to be split. He brought dessert for the 9 children in the party before they started to get antsy. Food was great and servings were huge. Nobody could finish their meals. Definitely going back!
Food great. Service excellent! Love the Brownies. We were seated promptly and really enjoyed our evening.Relaxing atmosphere and I would definately recommend it. We will be returning
Food: Great Service: Fantastic Price: Reasonable you won't be disappointed, I will most definitely be returning and telling others to come and try out this amazing restaurant.
Service and food is excellent. Pricing is great, try the chocolate chip cookie sundae with a cup of their coffee! I will definitely return!
The first time I visited Under the Volcano was in 1990 when I graduated from Fanshawe College. It is so nice that after all these years I can still celebrate special events in my life in an atmosphere as comfortable as this. I still enjoy the Chicken Chimichanga as much as I did my first one in 1990. Friendly efficient service and quality food is what keeps me coming back. choas
Myself, my wife, and my youngest daughter went there last night. This was our second visit to Under the Volcano. The food was "good". Atmosphere is GREAT! The first time we went, we found it astronomically expensive. A few weeks ago we received a "Groupon" to go there, so we decided to re-visit. The food was "good", and again the atmosphere was GREAT. We had a "simple" meal - no alcohol, no appetizers, and nothing "extra". Our daughter ordered from the childrens menu. When we received the Bill, I pretty much fell out of my chair. Almost $50!!! Bottom line. Food was good. Atmosphere great. But WAY WAY over-priced for what you receive.
My wife and daughter took me out for Mexican for my birthday. I love Mexican food, I don't know what this was. This was the worst Mexican Restaurant I have ever eaten in. The food was way---WAY over priced. The portion size was ok, the food resembled Mexican, but there is no way in the world that a Mexican would have said this was typical Mexican food. No flavor, no character, poor presentation, dried out rice, non Mexican bean mixture. A half hearted attempt at best...no I think the heart had died. The service was lack luster, also no character, a real poor attempt.
The margarita options were great. The food, however was less than traditionally Mexican and VERY bland. My paella had no taste, and the shrimp were rubbery. The tacos were very plain. The nachos weren't bad and the guacamole was tasty.
I thought this place would be better! I ordered the veggie chimichanga when I really meant to get the black bean and spinach chimichanga. When I asked for lettuce and tomato the waitress didnt let me finish, she was like ummm you know its deep fried dont you? I wanted it on the side. I asked for rice with it and she brought me fries, which were good but not what I asked for! I prob wont be going back!
Chips and salsa were the best part of the meal. Beans, guacamole, and cheese tasted unappetizing, and condiments were served in flimsy cafeteria ketchup-style paper containers on one's plate. Service was very good (trying to make up for the food?), but unfortunately not enough to salvage the overall experience.
I've been enjoying Under the Volcano for over 20 years, so it was only natural that I went there with friends to celebrate my birthday. We were given a large area adjacent to the bar (and great margaritas!) and the owners offered us some complimentary apps (thanks - loved the quesadillas!). Service by the seasoned staff was cheerful and attentive as always. Favourite dish - cayenne beef chonita. Truly cathartic! Thanks Under the Volcano for making my special day very memorable indeed!
The food at this place is terrible, terrible, terrible!! They have no idea how to prepare a meal. Both our "specialty mexican dishes" were mushy and tasteless. They weren't even served hot. The waiter was a nice guy, but generally clueless. I returned my meal virtually untouched, and told him it was terrible. They didn't so much as apologize and still charged me full price. I'll never go here again. Hopefully my review saves you the grief of trying it yourself.
Went to Under The Volcano twice recently ~ on a date, and then with my parents. Had the nachos tonight - omg, they were AWESOME! Cheeziest nachos I've had in forever! When I went last time, I had the fajitas, and they were fantastic as well. I've been going to Under the Volcano for years, and have always had great experiences there, I have never had a bad meal there. Will definitely be going back again soon :)
