How this place has managed to survive this many years is an unsolved mystery. There is absolutely no atmosphere. I ordered chicken wings and beer - the wings were completely dried out - they have better wings at a fraction of the price at the Pizza Pizza next door. The fact that Bogey's is in the top 20 Kitchener restaurants on Restaurantica makes me question all the reviews (including mine) written on this site. I will give them 5 stars for the most inappropriate use of the word "rustic" in a restaurant name.
We've gone here a few times, and every time we think we should have just stayed home. I'll start with the general stuff. The restraint seems as though it can't make up its mind what it wants to be. It's part casual dining, part sports bar, and part experimental cuisine. The regulars want to watch the giant TVs and have a few drinks, most of the families want to have a nice meal, and the cook seems to want to show off. The interiour is uncomfortable in general, from the too-dim lighting, the cheap uncomfortable seats, the tile floor which makes the chairs scream every time someone moves, the cold uncomfortable booths, and the rows of bench seats along the walls which have a footrest which is at the wrong height to hold your feet comfortably (I'm of average height, so I'm guessing others feel the same). When we were last there, one of the two rows had no footrest, so you had to dangle your legs like a three year old. The dining room, which I think is less than half of the space in the restaurant, feels cramped and cold, and just plain out of the way. The bar is a little better, but not by much. The food can be okay, but not much more than that. They seem to pride themselves on gourmet burgers, but the burgers themselves are just big piles of ground beef with nothing holding them together. The same is true of everything they have with ground beef or chicken in them. The cook also seems to want to make some really out there dishes which just don't work. I don't know if this is someone who has been to chef school or someone who just watches too much Food TV, but some of the items on the menu are bizzare and off putting. For example, one of the burgers comes with "beef, pickled ginger, soya wasabi mayo, and sliced cucumbers", another "burger, goose liver pate, wild mushrooms, caramelized onion jam served open faced Chicken Caesa". I really can't see how a casual restaurant is going to have people knocking down the doors for that. He also seems to want to throw guacamole onto everything he can, even if it makes no sense, like a chicken club with pulled pork. This is a minor point, but I would really like it if a place that had this many burgers could give me a chicken breast on a bun, instead of a ground chicken and ground turkey burger that is worse than the beef ones. From reading the menu, it looks like they're trying to make exciting food, but for some reason it all comes out terribly bland. It's hard for me to go there, because most of the food sounds unappetizing. They have what seems like a large menu, but there's almost nothing worth ordering on it. I'm not saying that all food has to be boring and the same, but if I'm going to a casual restaurant in a shopping plaza, I'm not looking for something really out there. Just normal pub food would do. I also have to note that the beer selection there is pretty sad. Everything on tap is basically a domestic lager except Keith's, which is not much of an improvement. They don't have much else in bottles, just more domestic lagers. As for service, I put adequate because that's really as far as it goes. Sometimes we get decent service, sometimes not. Often the food is late, or the bill, and the waitresses don't seem to go out of their way for anyone. Its okay, but really not more than adequate. I had a hard time with price range, because I suppose its usually about 20$ per person, but that's for a really basic meal. We went there once and got two burgers, a beer, and a coke, and ended up spending about 50$. That still seems a little steep to me, especially considering how bland the food was. Another thing that I find uncomfortable about this place, and which to be fair is not entirely the management's fault, is the regulars. I've been hassled by the same group of drunks on the patio a half a dozen times when I've been walking past with my groceries or just going into the place. There are also usually a few guys standing at the bar yelling and swearing at each other,
I absolutely love this place. My family have been going for years and we have never once had a bad experience. I don't know who these people are who are leaving negative reviews, but judging from their tones and attitudes, they remind me of the impossible-to-please types I spent 4 years serving. I have had no less than 40 meals at this restaurant since it opened and I have never had a bad experience. In fact, I went in recently for my mother's birthday and the servers made every attempt to make her feel special and valued, giving her free desserts and giving us our non-alcoholic beverages for free. Both the bartender and our server checked in on us frequently, and wished my mom a wonderful birthday. They really made it a great night out for her, for which I was very grateful. Not only that, but my grandmother was a regular for many years. When she passed away last year, the owner Don not only came to her funeral despite us not even mentioning it, but also made a donation to her favorite charity. If we want to talk about class, Bogey's is in a class of it's own in all ways. Thanks Don and all for your wonderful food, service and kindness!
I was surprised to see the scathing reviews of Bogey's. We have eaten there frequently and never had a problem with cleanliness or rudeness. We would also agree with those who can tell that the chef must have some professional training, as the menu is very good and the food is always perfectly cooked. This kitchen understands what a lot of others don't - Don't overcook the food! Selection is good, dishes are tasty and consistent, and the atmosphere relaxed. Thumbs up.
I am writing this half an hour after leaving. My wife and I thought we'd try Bogey's again after 3 yrs of avoiding it. 3 yrs ago we went for lunch-1 hr after opening and the waitress came to our table with a shirt with old food all over it. 3 yrs later, we thought we'd try again. 11am on a Sunday we walked in and the first thing we noticed was the floor was grimy/slippery as we walked to our booth. Upon sitting in our booth and resting my forearms ont he table, I noticed the table was sticky. We ordered seafood nachos, which were very good, but came with a side order of 4 houseflys that buzzed us the entire time we were there. I ordered the steak and caesar salad, which was medium in quality. My wife ordered cast iron skillet chicken, which was described as boneless and brined. First-the chicken breast was obviously not brined, it was very dry. The chicken thigh was juicy because it was raw from the bone to 3/8 of an inch out from the bone. The boneless chicken had the thigh bone left ion and the large breast bone was still on the chicken breast. When the "chef" came to the table to see how things were, my wife pointed out that the chicken was raw and the "chef" told her it wasnt, it's ok because it was close to the bone. 3/8 of an inch is not close to the bone!! As well, he did not offer to do anything about it. I also asked our server for a glass of water and never got it. The chicken was never brined, my wife is a trained chef and nearly broke out laughing when she tasted the chicken. We will NEVER go back.
If you want to pay restaurant price for prepackaged frozen food, cooked poorly, in a dirty kitchen (likely by a dirty chef - I found a hair in my poutine!) and eat it in a filthy restaurant full of glaring trucker types than by all means eat here! the server was comatose, she did not great us just walked us to a dirty table and tossed down some greasy menus. i don't think she said one word to us the entire dinner. That is, until i found a hair in my food! she asked me if i wanted another poutine (which i didn't the fries were half frozen and the mere fact i found a hair made me want to run screaming from the place) instead i told her i would not pay for my meal. She looked very put out and went to ask the manager. . . .i did get my food comped as it should have been, but they acted very put out about it! my boyfriend ordered wings which looked and tasted awful! prepackaged frozen crud. He said it was cold in the middle and they were all fat! worst dining experience i have ever had! i cannot imagine what the people who gave this place good reviews have ingested there over the years!
Found this gem of a restaurant by pure accident. My girlfriends and I frequently dine at various establishments and cannot find the quality and flavour of food elsewhere. We enjoyed a caesar salad as an appetizer, followed by Dons peppercorn chicken pasta as the entree, which inhibited several succulant flavours rolled into a delightful dish. The restaurant incorporates a vast selection of dishes at affordable prices. There truly is something for everyone on Bogeys menu ranging from chicken tenders to exotic Thai dishes and daily specials. Definitely will return to this establishment!
Horrible dirty restaurant, unprofessional people working there. Waitress was nice although she messed up our order, but we still tipped her well. Don't even try to talk to the owner, Don. Food is overpriced. The chicken fingers were tasty but there were only 4 pieces drownind in fries for 12 dollars. The owner insulted my children when I called in to complain about the service we received. The curry chicken dish was overseasoned with curry powder. I could not taste any coconut at all. Waste of time to go there!
This place has the right name. RUSTIC. Dirty is more like it. It is a hang out. Have to walk by ashtrays before you even enter the place. Coffee was OK but not hot. Fries were cold. Plates that were already set on table were dirty. All 4...The waitress was very friendly however she was more interested in the guys hanging out on the bar side. Laughing and talking. I heard so much great stuff about the food but am so disappointed.
What a dive! This place was such a waste. I had the burger and it was burnt to a crisp. THe bun tasted old and stale, same with the fries. The service was terrible as well. Perhaps it was an 'off' day. Will never return on my dime, sorry.
Bogey's is a well kept secret in Pioneer Park. They make the best prime rib in the area. The chef there (he must be a trained chef) pays attention to detail and it is certainly apparent in his choice of menu, food preparation and staff. The prices are very reasonable as well. The atmosphere is casual which suits me fine. The atmosphere is casual and not noisy and the garlic mashed potatoes are wonderful.
I had the burger. I found that it was quite ordinary and pretty greasy. Also, I ordered it w/out onion but it came with the onions on (not an enormous problem if that was the only problem). My friend had the Wings and enjoyed them (spicy with flavour). We had to wait for over 15 minutes for the check and then change for the tip (which went down the longer we had to wait).
I am so glad I have discovered this place! I have never seen such a good menu, it took me about 10 minutes to decide what I wanted, because everything sounded amazing! Seafood Nacho's? I have never heard of such a thing, and they were excellent! Such a wide selection of different foods. The serving sizes are huge and well priced. The girls they have working there are so polite and friendly, constantly helping eachother out. We will definatly be returning, I have never left a restaurant so satisfied!
It is about time!! Nothing complicated just good food and good service. If your looking for a meal that you 'll remeber and brag to your friends about this is the place. The prices are fair and the food is delicious. The waitress is attentive, and you leave feeling satisfied. I will be back again and again and if you want to have a place you looking forward to going back to, I suggest you meet me there.
New menu looks good, have to try some more items. Always a great experience, girls are great and fast too. Always recommend people to go to Bogey's and eat. Nice relaxed atmosphere.
I brought my family to Bogey's based on the recommendations by Restaurantica reviewers, and boy were they on the nose with this one. This is a roadhouse, so don't expect a fancy decor. But, if you want exceptional food and friendly efficient service, then this is the place for you. Firstly, the offerings on the menu, while being similar to other similar restaurants, all have their own unique flavorings and touches that take them way beyond average. From the delicious prime rib and barley soup, to the perfectly crispy and salted sweet potato fries, and the large, loosely packed hand pressed hamburger patty, this was simply the best meal I can ever remember at this type of restaurant. We were told by the waitress that the owner/chef has received awards for his food and I can understand why. I will definitely be returning to Bogey's when I am in the area and looking forward to sampling some of their other offerings. The waitress says the maple chipotle wings are a must, so I will be looking forward to my next visit.
I absolutely love this place. The service is always great (special shout out to Shannon and Kelly) and the food is amazing. I've had dishes at 5 star restaurants that aren't even as good as some of the stuff here. Always good size and value and the gnocchi pasta is my favourite dish ever. A shining gem, though hidden by its location. Keep up the great work guys!
Pretty good food for a strip-mall restaurant/bar. Very friendly service. A good neighbourhood place.
Wings were terrible, I had serious cause for concern that they had not originated on a chicken. They were paltry in size and had been cooked to an absolute crisp. Never again...
