"The biggest change in the window covering and furniture upholstery industry over the past decade has been the losses in the retail sector,” says Linda Richardson, owner of Westside Window Coverings & Design. “Most of the business is now virtual or in big-box stores."
This shift translates into a loss of service for the customer. "I ask a lot of questions," says Linda. "For example, what's the purpose of the window covering – is it strictly for looks, to keep in heat, keep out cold, lower the light penetration, privacy? Once those questions have been answered, I can eliminate some of the products out there to make sure someone is getting the right product for the right reason. You don't get that online."
Linda opened Westside Window Coverings and Design’s Kerrisdale showroom in 1997, first offering drafting and interior design services, as well as window coverings and furniture upholstery. "Then I realized that you can't do everything and do it well!" The store moved to specialize in window coverings, and Linda hasn't looked back. The showroom has samples of just about everything Linda offers, and provides a place where you can look, feel and touch the product.
"It's a quiet store," Linda says, "so clients can come in and just hang out. They can have my attention for an hour, if that's what they need. I don't charge design or hourly fees because that's not what we're about. It's all about educating the client so they know what they're going to get, and thereby eliminating 99% of the disappointment before they even order."
