The Firehall Arts Centre is a product of its environment and a champion of it. In a grand, heritage firehall on the corner of Cordova and Gore, the theatre company straddles stylish Gastown and diverse Strathcona, belonging to two neighbourhoods in the heart of the city. Past the bright red fire truck doors, features such as an intact fireman’s pole and old safety notices provide a continuous reminder of the original purpose of the eclectic structure.
It’s here that the small theatre company plans, commissions and stages up to 14 productions for the 175-seat theatre. The seasons are defined by their location. “The nature of the building informs how we move forward as an artistic organization,” explains Donna Spencer, artistic producer of The Firehall Arts Centre. “This building was designed to help all sorts of people, something we try to reflect in our work. Similarly, the diverse and immigrant cultures in our immediate community affect how we look at the city, the province.”
“We’re very lucky, working in the arts,” she continues. “We’re surrounded by people whose lives are so challenging. Being here provides a reminder that these are the stories that need to be shared: stories that relate to the community here.”
