Gone are the days when wine was shrouded in an aura of mystery and elitism, especially for those who make their own. Kathy Hicks and Paula Porritt, co-owners of Crescent Wines in Langley, say the whole experience is nothing but fun. “We try to make it look un-businesslike,” says Paula. “There’s just kind of an open, welcoming space when you come in the door.” Once clients enter, they’re greeted by Paula or Kathy, who quickly win them over with their easygoing, friendly personalities.
After the greetings, the second thing guests notice are all the medals on the walls; Crescent Wines has often been recognized by the community for consistently being one of the best wine makers in North America. “We work hard keeping it clean and welcoming, but not overbearing,” says Paula. “When new customers come in the door, I hope that they feel what we’re exuding, that we just want to make them feel welcome.”
