When Jack DaSilva’s uncle was looking to sell his Burnaby bakery, it seemed like the perfect business opportunity for Jack and his wife Luisa. “At 71, my uncle was more than ready to retire,” Jack recalls. “He said, ‘I just don’t have the energy anymore,’ and he felt the bakery needed young blood, preferably within the family.” Luisa had been looking for a way to work closer to home, and the couple lived just five minutes away from the bakeshop. And of course, they were already regular customers.
First opened in 1972, Fortuna Bakery & Deli has long been an institution in Burnaby's Willingdon Heights neighbourhood, so when Jack and Luisa took over the business in 2014, they inherited a well-established clientele.
